Hurry up and wait…

So we all like to travel.
But travel is expensive and as people living on a shoestring budget (according to Lonely Planet), we travel the cheapest possible way. Really.

This way we see more for less and go further than our budget initially promised. It also gives us the opportunity to build an intimate relationship with most airports, bus- and train terminals we pass through, as we spend quite a bit of time on them. Waiting.
And not waiting like in the queue for McDonalds, I mean 5, 10, 15+ hours.

Waiting on the second stopover of the cheapest flight you managed to book,
9000km out of your way, 36 hours travel time longer but $300 cheaper;
waiting for the cheapest bus that Diego’s uncle’s wife’s nephew arranged for you, which broke down on its way to the bus station, because its cheap…;
or waiting for the train to Delhi that’s delayed by 8 hours (apparently “just” 8).

For some, this time of ‘being’ gives them the opportunity to bring their diary up to date, to read or to reflect on what that hippie philosophised three nights ago.
For most however, it means only one of two things, sleep or eat.
Eat basically anything that’s left in you duffle bag or that you managed to buy on your leftover Pesos or make yourself comfortable on your travel bag for a siesta, which can be more comfy than you think as most of our bags are often the size of an under 9 tight-head prop.

Looking back I relish these times of fellowship and camaraderie,
not remembering how I smelled after travelling nonstop for four days, laying on the floor of a dock’s reception room in Cebu, scared that the rats might eat my ears…

Good times*
